What is insulation
By definition, insulation is a layer that helps to retain heat and is positioned between a jacket’s lining and outer shell. The difference between insulating layers and insulation is that while a layer of fabric can help you stay warm by trapping your body heat, insulation refers to a layer that is specifically made to do so.
How does an insulated jacket work?
The insulated ski jackets does exactly what the name suggests. An outer fabric (such as Gore-Tex) blocks wind and keeps you dry, insulation (Polartec or PrimaLoft) keeps you warm, and sometimes a soft lining for comfort. There are several styles of down inssulation available, but these jackets tend to be heavier and bulkier than all other types of jackets and lose warmth once they get wet. Without getting too technical, insulation typically uses trapped air to limit the ease with which heat can be transferred. Body heat is transmitted by conduction, to put it simply.
Heat is transferred directly between atoms during conduction, which occurs within a material. An atom starts vibrating when heat energy is applied to it, which causes the next one to follow suit, and the next, and the next, and so on. The heat then moves from the material to the air once it has reached the opposite end. The kinetic energy an atom has when moving or vibrating is lost as it moves or vibrates, but conduction still happens in the air. Therefore, heat transfer is more challenging in an environment with larger atom spacing (such as a gas).
Materials that are poor conductors are known as insulators. Because of this, materials with a lot of air in them, such as foams or entwined fibrous layers, make excellent insulators. A layer of long polyester fibers (typically woven inside jackets to create a sort of “fluff” that may resemble down or fur. This substance traps countless microscopic air pockets, and because air is a poor conductor and a good insulator, it is difficult for heat to pass through it. You stay warm even on chilly days because heat that cannot be reflected back into the material must be returned!
Types of insulation used in jackets
As they will largely determine how the insulation feels, there are a few different types of insulation to keep an eye out for. The majority of ski and snowboard outerwear will have a thin layer of compact insulation that has little compression. The kind of extremely fluffy insulation that is soft to the touch and incredibly springy will be synthetic down insulation. Long polyester strands that are woven into various patterns are used to create both of these insulation types. Comparing down insulation to compact insulation, the latter is more often just a jumble of strands that have been loosely tangled into a thick and springy layer. Both are superior insulators
The other type of insulation that you might encounter is down. Normal down insulation is made of goose feathers and performs similarly to synthetic down in that it feels springy and traps air very effectively. However, conventional down insulation has recently lost favor due to ethical concerns, and synthetic down is taking its place, much like how vegan and synthetic leathers are replacing the real thing.
You may also come across wool insulation or fleece, but neither are strictly insulating, although they will add warmth to your Ski clothes or outerwear! You may also come across wool insulation or fleece.
